Windows 7 goes End of Life

Let's look at the implications of this and what your options are.

Business Continuity

On January 14th, 2020 Windows 7 goes End of Life. Microsoft stops supporting it.

That means no security updates, no software updates, and definitely no support from Microsoft.

If you continue to use Windows 7 on your laptops and PCs, you are running a real risk.

  • No security updates means you are at risk from hackers, malware and viruses.
  • No software updates means Microsoft aren’t fixing anything found to be wrong and they won’t work to make it compatible with other applications
  • If your IT support provider cannot fix an issue you have with Windows 7, there is no additional support available from Microsoft , no even on a paid basis.

Let’s look at the options available to you at this point:

Keeping you up and running

Upgrade your current device to Windows 10

Upgrading your Windows 7 laptops or PCs to Windows 10 will ensure you keep getting the software and security updates from Microsoft. It will also mean your IT support company can get Microsoft support, should they need it.

However, you will miss out on the increased performance and security a new device, running Windows 10, will provide.

Keeping you up and running

Upgrade to a new Device running Windows 10

The best way to move forward and to take advantage of the improved security and productivity Windows 10 Professional brings is to upgrade your devices.

Increased security through functionality such as Windows Hello – using facial recognition, fingerprints or accompanying devices to guarantee only authorised users get access to the device.

Improved productivity because of the higher specification and functionality such as touch screens and Windows Ink

Do Nothing

Of course, there is the option to do nothing. This, however, is an extremely bad idea. Although you are saving some money, you are risking the IT security and productivity of your business.

Over time, your laptops and PCs will become less and less performative and the risk to your business becomes bigger and bigger.

The only reason we mention it is to make sure this is what you don’t do!
